☆ A Bundle of 18th-Century Love Letters Is Unsealed at Last

For nearly 250 years, the letters, more than 100 of them, sat sealed in Britain’s National Archives, unopened and unexamined until a history professor stumbled upon them. He found, to his delight, a treasure trove bearing intimate details about romance and daily life in mid-18th-century France. Inside the box, Dr. Morieux found three bundles of letters. Only three of the letters had been opened, most likely by a low-level clerk shortly after the British Navy had received them from France. The clerk may have deemed them not worthy of further inspection and put them into storage, where they were forgotten about.

Love letters sent to French sailors have been opened for the first time in 265 years. For more than 265 years, these letters — along with more than 100 others sent to French prisoners — were left unread. A picture shows one of the long-lost letters addressed to french sailors over 265 years ago. Almost 20,000 French sailors were captured by the British military to thwart France's effort to crew their state-of-the-art ships during the Seven Year War. In 1758, out of 60,137 French sailors, a third were detained in Britain, according to the press release.

“These letters are about universal human experiences, they’re not unique to France or the 18th century,” Morieux said in a statement. Seeing that the small letters were still sealed, he asked whether correspondence could be opened and was granted permission. Next time you write to me, please do not forget your father,” his mother’s letter read. “Here is a son who clearly doesn’t like or acknowledge this man as his father,” Morieux said. The contents of the letters written to the crew of the Galatée have fascinated him, and he wants to keep pulling that thread.
